2013 Miracle on Kansas Avenue Christmas Festivities
Even Santa made an appearance at last year’s Rescue Run.
Here at Briggs, we care more about just selling cars. We love the communities that we serve, and as a way of giving back, we attempt to provide you with information not only on events that we sponsor, but other community events as well. That includes the 2013 Miracle on Kansas Avenue Christmas Festivities which have become a tradition for many families in Topeka.
This year, the festivities will be taking place on Saturday Nov. 30. If you haven’t been in attendance before, we’ll give you a brief overview. The Miracle on Kansas Avenue festivities include a fun-filled day of which features shopping, dining, music, the annual Rescue Run, the lighting of the community Christmas tree and a parade later in the evening.
The shopping, dining and music will be taking place all day, but the times for the scheduled events are as follows:
8th Annual Rescue Run (4:20pm) – Proceeds from the Rescue Run benefit the Topeka Rescue Mission which for the last 58 years, has provided food, shelter, clothing training and hope to homeless and impoverished residents of Topeka. Last year more than 700 participants participated in the Rescue Run, and this year coordinators of the event are hoping for 1000. This is a great way to give back to the community. The MKA Invitational will begin at 4:20pm to ease congestion for the 5K runners, and the traditional Rescue Run will follow at 5pm.
Community Tree Lighting (5:30pm) – Every year, a team of employees from Westar Energy Inc. get together and decorate the community Christmas tree. Last year the 30-foot blue spruce was outfitted with pinecones, ornaments, bows, ribbon and about 50 strands of lights. While everything is put on in advance, the lighting of the tree is delayed until the Miracle on Kansas Avenue Christmas Festivities where the community surrounds the tree as it is illuminated. This is just another great event that brings the community together.
The MKA lighted Christmas parade is a fun time for the whole family.
MKA Lighted Christmas Parade (6pm) – Soon after the lighting of the community tree, the parade kicks off. At 6pm, the sun is down and the lights come on. The parade features a variety of holiday-themed entries which all don lights, making for a one-of-a-kind parade experience.
There is plenty of fun to be had during the Miracle on Kansas Avenue Christmas Festivities. We highly recommend that you make your way downtown to take part in at least some of the events.
